Ketamine Treats Depression Differently

Ketamine is one of the first truly new treatment options for depression. And it has been found to be especially effective for those suffering from treatment-resistant depression.

What Should I Know About Ketamine?

Ketamine is an FDA approved anesthetic and has been used in hospitals since the 1970s.

When used for treating depression, ketamine is administered in much lower doses than those used in anesthesia procedures, which means you are awake the entire time.

At our clinic, ketamine is administered intravenously (aka, via an IV drip).

The recommend ketamine infusion protocol for depression is four to six infusions administered within a 2-week timeframe

If you are taking antidepressant medication or other medication, do not stop taking them while undergoing ketamine for depression.

Ketamine therapy is not a cure for depression. Instead, it is a highly effective part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

“Believe in your ability to heal. You can get better. KKC is clearly committed to helping you get there”

What To Expect

The process starts with a free initial consultation to help determine if ketamine therapy is right for you. You can call our office or contact us through our website and we’ll call you! After the phone consultation, we’ll move through the next steps in the process, including filling out patient intake forms.

Before starting ketamine therapy for depression, your doctor will need to fill out a Patient Care Form confirming your diagnosis and your ongoing care. We also accept all patients who have been referred by their physician for ketamine for depression.

If you have any questions about our services, get in touch or stop in to our West Covina ketamine clinic.

During Your Ketamine Infusion

We have designed our entire ketamine clinic to feel like home, not a hospital. We understand that comfort and privacy are key to a positive ketamine therapy experience, and we want you to feel completely safe and relaxed before you begin.

While our private infusion suites do feel like home, they are equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment. Before administering your ketamine infusion, we will place an IV and apply monitors that record your heart rate and rhythm, blood pressure, and oxygen levels. We monitor all of these vital signs throughout the entire ketamine infusion, which lasts about 45 minutes. You will be awake for the entire time and many of our patients choose to listen to music. You can learn more about ketamine for depression on our FAQ page.

Our Clients Share Their Experience

“Absolutely life changing experience. Very kind and knowledgeable staff. I would recommend Karitas to anyone dealing with depression, anxiety, OCD, or PTSD.”

“I have been suffocating under my depression for so many years that I had forgotten what it felt like to not be debilitatingly sad. Ketamine gave me my first taste of healing from that endless pain.”

I took my son to the clinic on Friday because he still felt a little skeptical and he had questions. He not sure if he wanted to get the treatment yet.  After his questions were answered he decided to get his first treatment and he’s so glad he did.

The effects were almost immediate and he certainly felt something shifted n lifted the gloomy feeling . I’m so happy to see him this way. It’s been a long time coming. I’m getting my son back, a happy young man. Thank you Karitas! You all are awesome!”

How Does Ketamine Work?

Researchers are still trying to determine exactly how ketamine helps people find relief from depression and chronic pain. The leading theory right now is that ketamine therapy works by stimulating the regrowth of synapses and neural connections within the brain. You can think of it like rewiring the brain.

If you have suffered from depression, you know how easy it can be to get stuck in negative thought patterns. It can take all your effort to try to shift towards a more positive way of viewing the world. Ketamine therapy stimulates your brain’s ability to create new brain circuits, improving your brain’s function and helping alleviate depressive symptoms.

Another reason why researchers, doctors, and patients are excited about ketamine’s potential to revolutionize depression treatment is that it works differently from current depression medications. Existing antidepressants act on serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine, while ketamine acts on glutamate. Glutamate is the most common chemical messenger in the brain and is an important part of helping synapses change in response to experience and memory.

Researchers suspect that ketamine’s effectiveness lies in its ability to catalyze synapse growth and neuroplasticity. Chronic stress and depression depletes certain areas of the brain, but your brain can regrow those areas.
